“Every relationship between two individuals or two groups will be characterized by the ratio of secrecy that is involved in it” So said German philosopher Georg Simmel over one hundred years ago. And with the birth of Education Scotland perhaps, or even, hopefully, we can look forward to a new era of openness and transparency [...]

I don’t know if you watched this, but there’s been some interesting reaction from the press and, more importantly, teachers themselves. I think its a bit condescending of cheeky chappie Jamie O to waltz into schools and try to show us how to, as he put it, re-engage kids with education. After all, we know [...]

So teens are going off blogging and turning increasingly to social networking sites such as Twitter instead. So says a recent article in the New York Times I came across, courtesy of the Smart Brief on EdTech. Some interesting comment, particularly about the reasons for this apparent switch. One of these was the time taken [...]

“Your Majesty,” the prime minister said, “we have a request for you. The people have found out about this extraordinary fabric and they are anxious to see you in your new suit.” The Emperor was doubtful showing himself naked to the people, but then he abandoned his fears. Started using ‘Big Brain Academy’ this week. Basically, for those that don’t know, this consists of 100’s of problem-solving puzzles and mental maths questions. It can be played individually or in teams and will store data so that you can monitor your performance, a little like the Dr Kawashima stuff for the DS. We are [...]

I was looking through the latest AERS research commentary magazine last night (it’s not on line unfortunately). In this October edition, they have devoted almost the entire space to a discussion of the research around virtual environments (including a large amount of commentry on GLOW) in Scottish education. The front cover names this coverage ‘Glimmer’ implying that whilst [...]

I’m currently working on putting together a project which is a part of our learning community transition programme. It’s all about games-based learning, delivered through the Nintendo DS and on-line through GLOW. I’m working with a fantastic group of head teachers who recognise the value in terms of education to the kids and professional development to [...]

This is a trailer for a series of posts that I’m going to publish this weekend and over the following week. I’m in the process of putting together three big presentations at the moment (for schools and the SERA conference) and I’m also leading and project-managing a learning community project which has started to gather pace. [...]
