Secrets and lies, openness and closure…

Posted by: mimanifesto on: July 6, 2011

“Every relationship between two individuals or two groups will be characterized by the ratio of secrecy that is involved in it” So said German philosopher Georg Simmel over one hundred years ago. And with the birth of Education Scotland perhaps, or even, hopefully, we can look forward to a new era of openness and transparency [...]

The Emperor’s new clothes….

Posted by: mimanifesto on: April 5, 2010

“Your Majesty,” the prime minister said, “we have a request for you. The people have found out about this extraordinary fabric and they are anxious to see you in your new suit.” The Emperor was doubtful showing himself naked to the people, but then he abandoned his fears. After all, no one would know about [...]

Future models of assessment…

Posted by: mimanifesto on: November 8, 2009

We had the second meeting of the SQA Future models of assessment working group last week. This gave the seven classroom practitioner members an opportunity to report back to the group (and several interested folk from within the SQA management teams) on how their individual assessment projects were taking shape. Very interesting presentations  followed from [...]

Work-life balance – a rediscovery

Posted by: mimanifesto on: October 14, 2009

Things have been very quiet on this blog of late. Now I’ve threatened to go quiet in the past, usually with much fanfare and then kept on blogging anyway. This time, I just sort of faded away. A combination of many things prompted this quasi- web 2.0 disappearance ( I also went very dark on [...]

Moving forward with IT

Posted by: mimanifesto on: July 9, 2009

The recent OFSTED report , talking about ICT initiatives in England and Wales makes the following point…  despite the heavy investment in ICT there was no evidence of the “systematic evaluation of the impact on learning”  Read the report summary, courtesy of Merlin John online here… http://bit.ly/hUxZE I’ve often written about my own feelings on [...]

Self-evaluation – a wider purpose ?

Posted by: mimanifesto on: April 4, 2009

There’s a lot of this going on all over the country at the moment. The new HMIE-lite inspection regime relies upon schools undertaking rigorous internal quality assurance where the concept of using self-evaluation to inform and enhance both the learning and teaching and just as importantly the life and ethos of a school. I blogged [...]

More on GLOW and organic growth

Posted by: mimanifesto on: March 30, 2009

The QA debate over GLOW learn has been interesting for me, and prompted some reflection as well as revisiting previous blog posts. One in particular appears to be very relevant to this topic, from just under a year ago http://mimanifesto.wordpress.com/2008/06/14/glow-future-directions-just-keep-the-faith/ The comments are also very interesting from a variety of folk, including Andrew Brown and [...]

National bodies and education part 3 – brainstorming suggestions

Posted by: mimanifesto on: November 4, 2008

As much of the focus of the LTS and LA central team work is on GLOW at the moment, these points below have a Glowing kind of focus. Of course, they could apply to any centrally driven initiative, counterbalancing a top-down initiation with a bottom up capacity building and practiced-based programme of growth… It’s an [...]

National bodies and education….part 2; questions asked

Posted by: mimanifesto on: November 2, 2008

So, does LTS add value to the teaching and learning in our classrooms across the country then? and can a national government body with an advisory remit have an influence on the education service across the whole country, enough of an influence to make a difference, adding value to the product in question, education? Or [...]

National bodies and Scottish education…part 1; Setting the scene

Posted by: mimanifesto on: November 1, 2008

These are challenging times in education. The government’s much vaunted ‘concordat’ with local authorities has resulted in actual cuts for many education departments all over Scotland. As news of further budget ‘freezes’ begin to leak out of the town halls up and down the land, surely we need to examine how our money is spent, [...]

This is a trailer for a series of posts that I’m going to publish this weekend and over the following week. I’m in the process of putting together three big presentations at the moment (for schools and the SERA conference) and I’m also leading and project-managing a learning community project which has started to gather pace. [...]

Self-evaluation – an update

Posted by: mimanifesto on: September 26, 2008

This is an update to my post on the self-evaluation web application and the new HMIE inspection process.  Regular Self-evaluation embedded into the routine of a school will almost certainly lead to a growing culture of reflection and this can only be good for classroom practice but to start with, if a system such as this could [...]

Self-evaluation and a cuddlier friendlier HMIe ?

Posted by: mimanifesto on: September 25, 2008

I suppose everyone is going to be blogging about SLF08, and rightly so. What a fantastic event this year’s has turned out to be.  I’m going to be writing a little (!) about my thoughts over the next week or so but I’m going to start with something I took time to check out this [...]

What does it actually do?

Posted by: mimanifesto on: September 13, 2008

I’m in the middle of assignment-writing for a management and leadership PgDip programme at the moment and, just as I advise my own students to do, I’m taking plenty of ‘reward’ breaks as I work. One of them became more of a ‘Busgirl’s teabreak’ as I switched on the telly and found an episode [...]

Big lottery – Big plans

Posted by: mimanifesto on: September 9, 2008

..just had word that my recent big lottery fund bid has been successful – it means I can now go ahead and buy 10 mini notebooks and 10 Nintendo DS consoles with brain-training software for some out-of-hours school projects we want to run during this session using on-line science based games and DS maths and [...]

Quo Vadis ? GLOW at the crossroads..

Posted by: mimanifesto on: August 30, 2008

Over the course of this year so far, this blog has documented my own GLOW journey and experiences. Regular posting on here, and comment and discussion on other blogs has been invaluable in helping me to refine my thoughts about and approach to working with GLOW in my school and with others. I’ve been involved [...]

Skills for a digital age

Posted by: mimanifesto on: August 20, 2008

John Connell has an interesting post on his blog at the moment. Its all about how a school in Australia is allowing students to use mobile phones and ipods during exams… http://www.johnconnell.co.uk/blog/?p=940 They have to cite their sources to avoid plagiarism of course. It does pose a few questions fo us here in Scotland though. [...]

SMT heroes…

Posted by: mimanifesto on: May 31, 2008

I read this post on the ‘Scenes from the battleground’ Blog today.. http://oldandrew.edublogs.org/2008/05/31/heroes-of-smt/#comment-882 As I’m thinking a lot about leadership at the moment, it really made me think about what makes a good school manager, and I have to say, I’m leaning  towards Old Andrews view of things somewhat. What do you think ?
