It’s been a wonderful weekend. On Friday, the feast of the Epiphany, our friend Chucks was ordained priest at our church, St Mary’s Cathedral, Glasgow. He was ordained by the Bishop of Glasgow and Galloway, the Right Revd. Dr Gregor Duncan. And on Sunday, Fr Chucks celebrated his first Holy Communion and Evensong as a [...]

You know something’s a bit different about you. All your life you’ve been perpetually anxious about the simplest everyday things…you know, will you catch the bus, will you be at the station or airport early enough to make your train or flight. Will you get a decent seat, will it be crowded, will you make it [...]

We had a lovely chat with the ladies from Scottish Autism ( used to be the Scottish Autistic Society, I think) yesterday afternoon in the showroom They talked about their plans for the future and the services they provide to people on the Autistic spectrum and their families and friends, and the tough times ahead [...]

Judging by what we read in the papers at the moment, Scotland is not a great place to be growing up in at the moment. Drinking, drugs, and dangerous sexual activity are endemic in our society. Knife and gun crime is the norm amongst many children who roam the streets in feral gangs without a [...]

An excellent piece from Tom Shields in today’s Herald newspaper. He takes a rather witty and beautifully written series of pot-shots at Glasgow City Council Education dept for removing all foreign language assistants from their schools by remembering, somewhat fondly, his own experiences of the benefits of language assistants. The enormous benefits of having native [...]

As the title of this post says, I’ve been very bad at posting recently. It’s the usual litany of excuses…flu, Christmas, more flu, kids and sheer laziness. To be honest, I’ve been taking advantage of all the extra time I’ve had now that I’m on my ‘career break’. I will be back into writing this [...]

Today was the bi-annual pride march through Glasgow city centre. Following a route from Kelvingrove park, about 3000 folk marched along Kelvin way, Argyll street, and through Finniston into the city centre, culminating in a rally and festival in George square. Occasional rain showers did nothing to dampen the usual Pride atmosphere of celebration, fun [...]

I think we’d all agree that society (whatever definition one gives to this term) evolves over time. Things don’t remain static and with this change, beliefs and values also evolve. I’ve certainly seen the way society treats minority groups change, and very much for the better, over the past thirty years or so. It would [...]

There’s a lot of this going on all over the country at the moment. The new HMIE-lite inspection regime relies upon schools undertaking rigorous internal quality assurance where the concept of using self-evaluation to inform and enhance both the learning and teaching and just as importantly the life and ethos of a school. I blogged [...]

I’m currently working on putting together a project which is a part of our learning community transition programme. It’s all about games-based learning, delivered through the Nintendo DS and on-line through GLOW. I’m working with a fantastic group of head teachers who recognise the value in terms of education to the kids and professional development to [...]

I first came to Scotland 14 years ago to study, and apart from a couple of years teaching abroad have stayed here. I don’t usually get into the game of comparing England with Scotland, but one thing that has always struck me is just how naturally welcoming and inclusive the Scots people are. Even traditional local rivalries [...]

A couple of years ago,the case of the 11-year-old girl getting pregnant after a drunken night out on the town hit the headlines. I thought at the time that that was a shocking indictment of the state of sex education in schools. Predictably, the media attached the blame not only to her mother, but also to her [...]

I came across this video earlier today and just had to laugh – it reminded me so much of my grandson. The way he’s going, he will soon be teaching me how to do stuff on my pc ! Great ! But seriously, these are the kids we teach at the moment and will teach [...]

The recent lesson I taught from home using GLOW meet really got me thinking. Of course, the pupils enjoyed the ‘novelty’ factor and were engaged throughout the 50 minutes or so, but on a more serious note, I feel I achieved just as much if not more in that lesson than I would if I [...]

Prejudice against gays and lesbians is rife in schools because teachers are unwilling to face up to it. As we congratulate ourselves on the completion of another hard terms work, perhaps we can spare a thought for some of the things we didn’t learn at our teacher education institutions – real issues of equality and discrimination. For [...]

Once again, racism rears its ugly head in the news with both Glasgow and East Dunbartonshire, listing disturbing increases in reported racist incidents. While officials from both councils express their concern, both admit that the reasons for this increase are unclear, except for, perhaps, an improved system of recording. And, of course, the anniversary of 9/11 [...]
