Sometimes, you just have to blog…

Posted by: mimanifesto on: October 12, 2011

This is one of those posts that you just have to write. You know the ones. When a subject or issue really important to you and close to your heart comes along. For me, its usually something to do with education, but this post strays away from that a little although connected indirectly. To me [...]

Emotional education and society..

Posted by: mimanifesto on: March 1, 2011

Judging by what we read in the papers at the moment, Scotland is not a great place to be growing up in at the moment. Drinking, drugs, and dangerous sexual activity are endemic in our society. Knife and gun crime is the norm amongst many children who roam the streets in feral gangs without a [...]

What’s the problem with faith ?

Posted by: mimanifesto on: February 15, 2011

Just what is it with religion and homosexuality at the moment ? Ever since Peter and Hazel-Mary Bull lost their discrimination court case and rolled out their religion as a justification for their bigotry, the television and radio waves have been hot with news reports and discussion shows trying to analyse the wrongs and rights [...]

Pride Glasgow 2010

Posted by: mimanifesto on: July 17, 2010

Today was the bi-annual pride march through Glasgow city centre. Following a route from Kelvingrove park, about 3000 folk marched along Kelvin way, Argyll street, and through Finniston into the city centre, culminating in a rally and festival in George square. Occasional rain showers did nothing to dampen the usual Pride atmosphere of celebration, fun [...]

Africa – continent of shame

Posted by: mimanifesto on: May 30, 2010

Lots of news about Africa this week, and for once, it’s not about the football. The Malawian president has been ‘persuaded’ by the weight of international opinion and Sir Elton that pardoning the two gay guys who were thrown in prison just for daring to declare their love for each other in an engagement ceremony. That [...]

On equality and inclusion….

Posted by: mimanifesto on: August 3, 2009

I’ve often used this blog to write a little about my thoughts on equality and inclusion and in particular, homophobia in schools and the real damage to so many lives it causes. Here is a collection of these posts, grouped together in one page. Why do I often write about these issues ? well, I guess [...]

On society, inclusion, and evolving attitudes….

Posted by: mimanifesto on: July 15, 2009

I think we’d all agree that society (whatever definition one gives to this term) evolves over time. Things don’t remain static and with this change, beliefs and values also evolve. I’ve certainly seen the way society treats minority groups change, and very much for the better, over the past thirty years or so. It would [...]

All the recent negative publicity about the dubious integrity of our politicians has really got me thinking, as I guess it has everybody else, about our political system and the type of people it attracts, as well as the type of behaviour it appears to encourage in our elected members. And I’ve had a lot [...]

Self-evaluation – a wider purpose ?

Posted by: mimanifesto on: April 4, 2009

There’s a lot of this going on all over the country at the moment. The new HMIE-lite inspection regime relies upon schools undertaking rigorous internal quality assurance where the concept of using self-evaluation to inform and enhance both the learning and teaching and just as importantly the life and ethos of a school. I blogged [...]

Scotland the brave….and the pragmatic!

Posted by: mimanifesto on: August 23, 2008

I first came to Scotland 14 years ago to study, and apart from a couple of years teaching abroad have stayed here. I don’t usually get into the game of comparing England with Scotland, but  one thing that has always  struck me is just how naturally welcoming and inclusive the Scots people are. Even traditional local rivalries [...]

How education really can make a difference….

Posted by: mimanifesto on: May 30, 2008

A couple of years ago,the case of the 11-year-old girl getting pregnant after a drunken night out on the town hit the headlines. I thought at the time that that was a shocking indictment of the state of sex education in schools. Predictably, the media attached the blame not only to her mother, but also to her [...]
