Bishop Christopher Senyonjo is coming to Glasgow on Sunday. He’s also in Edinburgh to speak at the Spirituality Festival, but on Sunday morning he will be preaching the sermon in St Mary’s Cathedral, Glasgow.
Bishop Christopher has fought tirelessly against those in his country, Uganda, who practice terrible prejudice against LGBT folk in this part of the world. The tragic murder of LGBT activist David Kato has brought his work more into focus, and the eyes of the world are now watching both politicians and prelates in Uganda as they contemplate introducing draconian laws legislating against homosexuality.
The bishop has faced the ire of his superior in the Church of Uganda, Archbishop Henry Orombi over his support for the beleaguered LGBT community in Uganda. He has also put himself at extraordinary personal danger of harm by his outspoken support. He has been called the Ugandan Desmond Tutu for his fearless stance. His Letter to Archbishop Rowan Williams, head of the Anglican Communion outlines his rationale in more detail, and is perhaps well worth a read. Teachers of modern studies and RME might also find his missive an interesting discussion point.
Bishop Christopher and St Mary’s Provost Kelvin Holdsworth (himself a vocal supporter of LGBT rights) will be conducting a seminar after the morning service, suitably entitled ‘Uganda- the worst place in the world to be Gay’. Details can be found on the Cathedral website or on Kelvin’s blog
