I was looking through the latest AERS research commentary magazine last night (it’s not on line unfortunately). In this October edition, they have devoted almost the entire space to a discussion of the research around virtual environments (including a large amount of commentry on GLOW) in Scottish education. The front cover names this coverage ‘Glimmer’ implying that whilst [...]

The Scotish Educational Research Association conference is taking place at the moment in Perth. Saturday is a practitioner day. Now this concept is not everybody’s cup of tea, but at least it allows teacher-researchers to attend and present their research papers when they otherwise might be unable to attend due to teaching commitments. A lot of [...]

They are filming an episode of Taggart in my street at the moment. Loads of bright lights turning the dusky Glasgow night into day, loads of noise and disruption, and only a day’s notice asking folk not to park their cars by their houses so that the precious actors and film crew are not inconvenienced [...]

It’s been a better week in school, with light actually becoming visible at the end of a very long tunnel. More staff are coming to see me about getting their GLOW log-ins and arranging training. We are going to be starting GLOW lunchtime/twilight drop in clinics to support staff who want to move forward with [...]

Merlin has written an article on his online service about my experiences with GLOW and educational philosophy in general. It’s based on a chat we had at SLF this year. I have to admit I enjoyed our conversations and my own sense of ‘unloading’ which made up much of the material for his piece. You [...]

Strangely enough, it’s not often I get asked to do presentations in schools in my own local authority, so I was really pleased to be invited to do an in-service day presentation for the staff at Hamilton Grammar school this morning. The presentation was on GLOW and how it can be used effectively to deliver [...]

We had a two minute silence in school today to mark the Armistice – and apart from the usual idiots, all the kids were keen to pay their respects to those who fell in the two world wars and other conflicts that have taken place since. Many asked questions about why those wars happened and [...]

When I was thinking about these points and those covered in the series, I wrote that this was somewhat of a watershed time for me. I’m going to expand a little on this at the end of this post. First though, my final thoughts on LTS and LA central teams.
A classroom teacher writing a series [...]

I’m currently working on putting together a project which is a part of our learning community transition programme. It’s all about games-based learning, delivered through the Nintendo DS and on-line through GLOW. I’m working with a fantastic group of head teachers who recognise the value in terms of education to the kids and professional development to [...]

As much of the focus of the LTS and LA central team work is on GLOW at the moment, these points below have a Glowing kind of focus. Of course, they could apply to any centrally driven initiative, counterbalancing a top-down initiation with a bottom up capacity building and practiced-based programme of growth…
It’s an unrefined [...]

So, does LTS add value to the teaching and learning in our classrooms across the country then? and can a national government body with an advisory remit have an influence on the education service across the whole country, enough of an influence to make a difference, adding value to the product in question, education? Or [...]

These are challenging times in education. The government’s much vaunted ‘concordat’ with local authorities has resulted in actual cuts for many education departments all over Scotland. As news of further budget ‘freezes’ begin to leak out of the town halls up and down the land, surely we need to examine how our money is spent, [...]
